First of all, the main image is more coloured than the rest, he seems to be in focus whereas the rest do not, this shows that the magazine publishers are trying to get a cross that this guy is the main focus of the magazine, the fact he actually takes up some of the magazine title shows that the title is going to be of less interest than the sin city film, the publishers have picked the right size for the main image as it's not too big where you cant see everything but it doesnt dwarf it's title, which is good. so people know what the film is and can see it clearly.
Big bold text has been used to grab the readers eye and has made effective use of the colour white to make it stand away from its background. the 'empire' is in red which is in red nearly most of the time on the empire movie magazine, this can be used as a brand technique and when consumers see that colour they will think its the empire magazine, as well as this it is a good colour which can stand out from any background,
A commercial film reel is used to take all the focus off one film, makes it not so 'boring' or 'dull for the reader as if they had just one movie to look at they may not be 'attracted to it' but with empire putting different films on there to look at it opens up the magazine to a much wider audience.
